1940'S SPECIAL - Part 2
By Damien Whitchurch
Going back to the 1940s for a system may seem like reaching too far back into the mists of time - but maybe not. Combing through my old - and very old - books the other week I came across a host of system ideas that stand the test of time.
Racing has changed in many ways in the past 50 years but the essentials of weight, class, speed and distance remain basically the same 'constants' in form analysis.
The system that intrigued me the most is called The Double Trouble and originated in the late 1940s. I have it in a newsletter published briefly during 1948 and circulated to a limited number of direct subscribers.
I've done only a few random checks on it and can report that it shows a lot of promise. Obviously, it needs closer inspection, which I am sure will be forthcoming from the 'systemites' among our readers!
THE DOUBLE TROUBLE SYSTEM
(1) All favourites which run 2nd in fields of eight or more runners are to be followed TWICE. Stop at a win.
(2) Favourites that run unplaced (4th or worse) are to be followed TWICE, providing they start at 3/1 or better in those next two starts. Stop at a win.
That's the system and you can see that it's simple but holds the potential to be quite dynamic. There are two aspects to it and each is sensible. The system provides you with a list of horses to follow which should be as effective as any other list you might draw up.
Obviously, the system can be operated anywhere in Australia, or overseas. A second system, in much the same fashion, was also published in a Sydney newsletter (The Flash) and its rules are as follows.
THE WINNERS SYSTEM
(1) Tick off the last-start winners in each race. If there is only one, it becomes a selection if it is 5/1 or lower in the pre-race betting.
(2) If there are two or more last start winners, give preference to the horse that had the most recent start.
(3) Any qualifier must be at 5/1 or lower in the pre-race betting market.
Once again, here is a 'golden oldies' system that makes a lot of sense. At the very least, you can use it to find the 'offbeat' selection to throw in your multiples, quinella and trifecta bets.
Now to a third plan which I think will be well worth testing out in the months ahead. It's called The Most Tipped Plan and operates on tipsters' polls. You can find a good one each week in the Sportsman for Sydney Saturday meetings. Otherwise, check out the polls in The Australian,, Sydney Morning Herald, Daily Telegraph, Brisbane Courier-Mail or Melbourne Herald-Sun.
THE MOST-TIPPED PLAN
(1) Decide which meeting you will bet on and then tick off the three most fancied runners on the tipsters' poll, using the total points as the guide.
(2) Link these three selections in all-up doubles and trebles for the PLACE only.
(3) If only two of the three selections are pre-race favourites then also link those two in a WIN double.
This is a nice, easy little approach that will give you some fun betting for the day, with the likelihood of some excellent returns for a small outlay, which is exactly what most punters desire.
The place all-ups will cost you $4. That's three doubles (A-B, A-C and B-C) and the treble (A-B-C), while the extra all-up double, if you have one, is another $1. That's just $5 in bets for the day.
Although the outlay is small, the prospects for a nice collect are excellent. You will be betting three well-fancied runners and all you are asking for $4 is that they
If we assume three places at $1.20, $1.50 and $1.60, your returns would be: $1.80, $1.90, $2.40 and $2.85, i.e. $8.95, a profit of 148%. If those three places contained a winning double, paying for the win, say, $2 and $2.75, you would win an extra $4.50.
This is just an example. Check it out for yourself ... and have fun!
