Systems that last a lifetime

Some selection systems are so good they can stand the test of time. One of them is The Rapide, which we featured in PPM some 12 years ago.

THE RAPIDE METHOD

My pal Richard Hartley Jnr says he's used The Rapide on and off for many years (Richard's like that; he is constantly switching his betting moves, believing that's often the best way to maintain long-term success).

The Rapide is one of a huge number of excellent system ideas that were contained in the pages of PPM in our issues through the 1990s. Readers are constantly writing to us to relate their real-life betting adventures using various systems we've brought to their attention.

The Rapide operates only on metropolitan Saturday meetings. The rules are as follows:

THE RAPIDE SYSTEM - RULES

- Ignore jumps races, 2yo races and any races at set weights, or at weight-for-age. Eliminate any runner that won last start. Consider any runner which finished within two lengths (inclusive) of the winner last start, providing it was in the first four home. This rule brings you into those horses that ran well last start and although beaten were not far from the winner.

- Eliminate any contender which has to carry more than 1.5kg above the weight it had last start, or is dropping more than 1.5kg. Simply look at the weight a horse carried last start and check it against today's handicapped weight. (Ignore allowances for apprentices).Thus, if a horse had 56kg last start and is now to carry 59kg it would be eliminated because its weight has risen 3kg. If a horse had, say, 57kg last start and 57.5kg today, then it would not be eliminated.

- Once you have your final contenders, eliminate any which have not won a race at today's track.

- The horse, or horses, left are the final qualifiers. Back all qualifiers if prices permit a decent profit. The alternative is to back the one you fancy the most, or the one that is available at the best odds.

So that's The Rapide, a fine system that can land you many good winners.

ANOTHER VERY USEFUL METHOD

The Two Thirds Terror system was first published in the Chicago Racing Sun Weekly in 1947. The creator was Dan Grey, a system man of that era. The system that we have published in PPM was adapted for Australian racing conditions.

THE TWO THIRDS TERROR SYSTEM - RULES

- Operate only on major city meetings on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

- Ignore all races except for those between 1400m and 1600m. Research has shown that the best results of this system came from this distance range, which is why the restriction is imposed. You can, if you wish, extend the distance range.

- The only runners to consider are those with a win strike rate of 60 per cent at course and distance. That is, a horse which has two from three at the track, or better, and two from three or better at the distance.

- You can select a horse with a 60 per cent strike rate at track only, or distance only. These selections become NORMAL bets. If the horse qualifies on both course and distance it becomes a SPECIAL bet.

- Special bets should be bet at twice the normal unit. So, if you bet in $10 units, a Special bet should have $20 on it. A Normal bet gets the nominal $10.

- If you are betting on two or more races, couple all selections in doubles, or all-ups. This enables you to cash in big if the selections are winners.

As you'll realise, this is a system that does not provide a whole lot of action, but its selective bets are very good ones.

Some years ago, a friend who made system creation his bobby passed on a plan that had been given to him by a fellow aficionado in the UK. He called it the Six Weeks Plan.

"This is a good one," be told me. "It gets some big priced winners."

I agree with him. It certainly looks to be a readymade winner-getter. It's very likely to do best on the city tracks. I call it...

THE SECOND UPPER PLAN

- Operate on city tracks, preferably Saturdays only.

- Consider only those horses which had their last start six weeks (42 days) or more ago.

- To qualify as a contender, a horse must have finished in the first 4 last start on a city track.

- The contender must have won over the distance of today's race.

- The contender must be racing in the same class as at its previous start.

This plan is a neat one. The bigger the price of the selection the better!
