The Guest Column

Herry Meyer

A couple of weeks ago I received a letter from Harry, a lifelong punter from the Hunter Valley. Based on an article I'd written for the September edition of Practical Punting Monthly, Harry decided to do a bit of exploratory research of his own. (- reported by Brian Blackwell).

Harry said that he'd never had the time during his working life to look at methodical selection systems, but now that he's retired, he elected to dabble around a bit to see what he could come up with.

Harry reckons he's developed something which has him fascinated, and is giving his selections (and therefore his wagers) a sound form base.

Apparently, all his life, Harry has used every method possible to select his bets, except direct form study. He mentioned one interesting idea, where for some time he backed every runner with the words silver, gold or red as part of their name.

USING POINTS TO CALCULATE THE BETS

Harry says he buys Sportsman every Tuesday and Friday and then runs his so-called 10 Point Plan across each flat race where most runners have had several starts. He suggests that without a computer, it takes him 10 minutes or so per race.

He also reckons that races from 1400m to 2000m appear more accurate in their final assessment. Horses first-up from a spell do not rate highly under Harry's system but, as we all know, they often win or are placed.

Using Sportsman's liftout section as a recording base, Harry allocates a cross (one point) every time a runner corresponds with one of his 10 points.

After he completes the ratings for each race, Harry adds up the points and prepares a summary in points order.

So far, the 10-pointers have achieved a fantastic winning record, as do those with 8 or 9 points when they have a break of at least 2 points on the next best rated runner.

So far as quinellas go, Harry suggests taking the first two rated runners with each other and the next three or four rated runners. He also stresses that there have been some fabulous trifecta dividends, either with the first couple of selections stood out to win, or boxing the first five or six selections.

Harry has no qualms in letting readers in on his 10 Point Plan. He's only a small-time investor now that he's retired. But he is having heaps of fun and keeping his mind active exploring racing systems.

And re-reading his stack of past issues of PPM looking for ideas he had never thought about before.

HARRY'S 10 POINT PLAN

Allocate 1 point where applicable for the following factors:

(1) Racing in same class or down in class.

(2) 20 per cent win strike OR 70 per cent place strike (or both, of course).

(3) Raced within 17 days (or has won first-up previously).

(4) In the top one-third of field on best average prizemoney per run.

(5) In THIS race, likely to be in first few runners at the turn.

(6) Has a class jockey on board.

(7) Beaten 3 lengths or less last start.

(8) Won at this distance at this track.

(9) Won within 150 metres of today's distance.

(10) Not racing over 200 metres more, or 100 metres less, than previous run.

I've applied Harry's 10 Point Plan to all races over the past two weekends. He may be correct about only working on distances over 1400m (or perhaps where no runner is first-up).

The results I've observed so far are extremely interesting, especially a Sydney race on a recent Sunday where a box trifecta on the first five selections would have netted over $12,000 for $1.

Not bad for a selection method based almost totally on runner quality and form.
