The Punt Master

Now more than ever before, Australian punters have the opportunity of making use of the best available advice and information on offer. Be it from the pages of Practical Punting Monthly to the pages of Sportsman Winning Post or Best Bets, punters are offered what amounts to an avalanche of facts, opinions and form.

But what of the non-print media such as the Internet, which over the past few years has emerged to such a degree that it now impacts on our everyday way of living, including many of the aspects associated with the horse-racing industry?

From online tote and bookmaking services to online formguides and other racing websites such as my own, the battle is on in earnest to gain a foothold in this new and exciting media.

One of the biggest benefits the Internet has brought is the emergence of various horse-racing discussion and chat groups, giving everyone with an interest an opportunity to have their say.

From time to time, there are some really good themes discussed, from how great this or that horse was to topics of a more educational nature.

One is from the Sydney-based "King Delamere", who claims to have been a winner in the last three or four years of his fifteen years on the punt. Here is his personal creed of the dos and don'ts of racing:

- Allow an hour to do the form for each meeting.

- Doing the form involves using a good formguide.

- Record every bet you make, e.g. win/place bets, exotics, etc.

Note: Review your week on the punt ... you would be amazed how good you are at some bet types, and completely hopeless in others.

- Always save on a bet if you have a chance of a decent payout in a double.

- Have a daily betting bank.

- Use no-one's opinion other than your own.

- Be on track as much as possible.

- Keep a black book.

- Doubles offer unbelievable value most of the time.

- Avoid any horse who is running over the same distance as at its previous start, unless the run is within 14 days (if a track is rated dead, add 100 metres to the distance. If a track is rated slow or heavy, add 200m to the race distance).

- Avoid horses coming back in distance.

While many would not agree with some of the opinions expressed, it was, nevertheless, a very enlightening contribution.
