Macau's pin-up horse still in Cox Plate
Tuesday 7 September 2010
By Mark Ryan
Macau's pin-up horse Luen Yat Forever was the only internationally-trained entry in Australia's weight-for-championship, the Cox Plate, after first declarations were taken on Tuesday.
The imported Imposing, who is currently completing his quarantine in the Werribee International Horse Centre, was also an acceptor but he will be trained privately by Robert Hickmott for his new owner Lloyd Williams.
A mouth-watering line-up of locals feature among the 89 first acceptors for the 2040m event at Moonee Valley on October 23 including defending champion So You Think and newly-crowned Horse of the Year Typhoon Tracy.
Theseo, Whobegtoyou, Metal Bender, Heart Of Dreams, Linton, More Joyous and three-year-olds Toorak Toff, Lion Tamer, Altius and Yosei are all first acceptances.
First declarations were also taken on Tuesday for the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) and the Thousand Guineas (1600m) with the Group One features to be run at Caulfield on October 9 and 13 respectively.
First acceptors for the Caulfield Guineas were up from 86 to 92 with Blue Diamond winner Star Witness the most notable omission after a minor injury setback last weekend.
The Starcraft colt will be reserved for sprint races later in the carnival.
Headlining the acceptors for the Caulfield Guineas, which launched last year's winner Starspangledbanner onto the world stage, is locally-trained Golden Rose winner Toorak Toff, Champagne Stakes winner Skilled, Altius, Kudakulari and Smokin' Joey.
Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily has been withdrawn from both Guineas through injury, with Curtana the other notable absentee from the list of 100 first acceptors for the Thousand Guineas which showcases the sport's elite three-year-old fillies.
Second declarations for the Cox Plate, Caulfield Guineas and Thousand Guineas close on September 21.
