Weekend Preview

For Saturday, January 10, 2009

The Gold Coast provides the big action this weekend.

The three races that will take everyone's attention are the two year old Magic Millions Classic, the three year old Magic Millions Trophy, and the BMW Magic Millions Cup.

They are worth $2,000,000; $1,000,000; and $500,000 respectively. A few of the owners with horses lining up for the Cup must think it's Christmas all over again, never dreaming their horses could end up in such a rich competition.

There will be dozens of form guides and so many tipsters: what can be said that's different? Well, the barriers are worth a hard look.

In the Classic, weather permitting, favourite Paprika has drawn to get the run of the race, and Shadow Assassin, firming in the market during the week, also has a great barrier. Stablemate Horizons has a more than reasonable draw, but some of the more fancied ones will have to work hard. In past years this has caused heartache and it may well again.

The other one to note is unbeaten Racing Pegasus, which has drawn a great marble and should have a cosy run. Koblenz, with two seconds to date, will be asked to do a lot from the outside (the best possible final barrier will be 17). Conceding that natural advantage to unbeaten Shadow Assassin and Paprika is a big ask.

In the Trophy, Express Air and Feline Flyer drew best of the favoured lot. If all the reserves come out, then Rock Kingdom comes in to 13, but it's still an unfriendly barrier. Damien Oliver will be required to weave some magic there. Express Air, with three seconds and a win from the last four outings, is well served. Many will be hoping that Michael Rodd brings his premiership-winning form with him back to the north, to guide Bhutane Dane across for Gai Waterhouse. Like Rock Kingdom, he could come in four places after scratchings, and maybe barrier 12 wouldn't be quite so bad. Not as bad as 16 anyway!

The open race (the BMW Cup) sees Black Piranha starting in the car park, whereas equal prepost favourite Albert the Fat has drawn a nice gate for once. Mr Slick has a perfect draw. With a run, Walking or Dancing could improve from the favourable barrier. Light Red is making the journey and this is the targeted race (for half a million, it would be for a lot of them!). The barrier won't help but there are form lines.

The weather may yet play a hand, so it could be best to wait for the day to unfold (remember the daylight saving differences). And of course, as always, there are plenty of other races on Saturday!
