Australian raider Coniston Bluebird has won the New Zealand Derby by a bob of the head over Down the Road at Ellerslie.

Trained by Bede Murray on the NSW south coast, Coniston Bluebird came back after being headed to win New Zealand's richest race in a photo finish.

The $2.2 million race was switched to Sunday after storms 24 hours earlier and the Auckland track was rated slow.

After racing back in the field Coniston Bluebird loomed up on the turn then fought a tooth-and-nail battle down the straight with Down the Road.

Just when Down the Road looked to have the race won the Australian gelding found something extra to give jockey Scott Seamer another victory in the classic he won on Leica Guv in December 2001.
