Racing Queensland has abandoned all race meetings scheduled for Rockhampton in January in expectation of major flooding.

In a release on Friday, Racing Queensland said Bureau of Meteorology warnings indicated the Fitzroy River would continue rising with major flood levels reaching nine metres by Sunday.

Should the river reach the predicted mark of 9.4 metres it would engulf the majority of facilities and the tracks at Callaghan Park, the release said.

The Fitzroy River borders the Rockhampton racecourse (Callaghan Park).

The river is expected to remain above nine metres for up to 10 days before the anticipated clean-up process begins.

"With this is mind and to provide certainty to Capricornia stakeholders, Racing Queensland has taken the decision to abandon all race meetings scheduled at Callaghan Park during January," Racing Queensland chairman Bob Bentley said.
