Hayes checks out German bred Budai for the Cup
Friday, February 3, 2012
Posted @ 7:48 amTHE Melbourne Cup has been rated the best staying race in the world for the past two years, so the trends established by the great race in that time are the benchmark for distance racing. In short, European form, especially that emanating from France and Germany, is king, reports The Age.
It says: Two French-trained horses have won the past two Melbourne Cups - Americain and Dunaden - and last year's third-placed horse was the German stayer Lucas Cranach, so it is no surprise that thoroughbred owners throughout the world are targeting these areas in Europe in the search for the next elite stayer.
Trainer David Hayes need not look too far to find horses with that form mix. In his Euroa stable is one of the best stayers in the world, US-bred Americain, which Hayes is preparing for a first-up tilt at the Australian Cup next month, as well as another horse few know much about. The six-year-old German-bred gelding Budai has his second run for Hayes tomorrow at Caulfield after a false start to his career here when first produced early in the spring. Hayes said the recent results of the Melbourne Cup strengthened his belief that Budai could make an impact in staying races in Melbourne and Sydney this autumn.
''He's got that very trendy form with strong performances in Germany and in France and we've seen how well that form has worked out here in Australia through the Melbourne Cup over the past couple of years,'' Hayes said yesterday.
At the forefront of the European charge up the international ratings is Americain, which followed his 2010 win with a luckless fourth as topweight last spring. It was considered good enough for him to be ranked the leading stayer in the world by one ratings system. Hayes, who has had the horse since the spring in what will be the entire's final season of racing, said Americain was extraordinary.
Snowden hopes Sepoy can end Oz career on high note
Wednesday, February 1, 2012
Posted @ 6:46 amHIS farewell to Australia may not promote another ''free day'' at the races, but super colt Sepoy is poised to remind racegoers later this month Black Caviar is not the only champion in Australian racing, reports The Age.
It says: While once again Sepoy's final run in the group 1 Oakleigh Plate on February 25 is likely to be overshadowed by Black Caviar, who races in the group 1 Futurity Stakes that day, Sepoy's closest companion, assistant trainer Paul Snowden, said yesterday he hoped Sepoy could end his racing career in Australia with a flourish.
''It would be great to keep his unbeaten record intact in Victoria and go out with a bang because this is where he has spent a lot of his time and this is where some of his great wins have been,'' Snowden said.
Sepoy and triple group 1-winning colt Helmet will end their Australian racing careers in Melbourne this autumn before being transferred to the Dubai base of Godolphin owner Sheikh Mohammed. From there, both are expected to tackle some of Europe's best races later this year.
Despite Sepoy's record, which sits at 10 wins and a narrow defeat from 11 starts, his greatness has been overshadowed by the extraordinary run of Black Caviar. But Snowden, who worked with the Ingham family when Lonhro was racing, said he rated Sepoy ''every bit as good'' as the amazing black stallion.
''I'll always have a soft spot for this horse,'' he said. ''I'm looking forward to him racing in the Oakleigh Plate and then in Dubai when dad [Peter] and I take him for the race on World Cup night, but it'll be a sad day when we hand over the reins because he's been such a great horse.''
Newmarket bid likely for Black Caviar to complete autumn assault
Tuesday, January 31, 2012
Posted @ 6:44 amIT IS a race that may have been overlooked because of its more testing conditions, but suddenly the $1 million Newmarket Handicap at Flemington on March 10 is shaping as the race where Black Caviar could complete her world record assault this autumn, reports The Age.
It says: The unbeaten star's trainer, Peter Moody, has been adamant in recent weeks that he wants Black Caviar to clinch her 20th consecutive victory in Australia and, if that is to be achieved before a planned trip to England this winter, the options include a tilt at the Newmarket two weeks after what is expected to be her 19th win in the Futurity Stakes.
After Black Caviar smashed her rivals and created new records for weight-carrying and for times run in last year's Newmarket Handicap - the race recognised as Australia's premier sprinting event - few expected that she would return to handicap conditions.
But her managing part-owner, Neil Werrett, conceded the possibility when he said over the weekend: ''If she got 59 or 59.5 kilograms, I think that could tempt Pete [Moody] and us into running her.''
The chances of her being allocated a Newmarket weight under 60 kilograms are remote at best, given she has won four group 1 races since winning the race last year with 58 kilograms, but if she was to be given 60 kilograms or a touch more when weights are released at the end of February, the race would be appealing for any number of reasons.
Comeback jockey Shinn lands plum Blue Diamond ride
Monday, January 30, 2012
Posted @ 6:57 amCOMEBACK rider Blake Shinn will have a prime chance at one of the early group 1 races for 2012 after being confirmed as the new rider for next month's Blue Diamond Stakes favourite Jimando, reports The Age.
It says: Trainer Tony McEvoy said yesterday he had given plenty of thought to who would partner the colt for his return race at Caulfield on Saturday and had opted for Shinn because of his knowledge of elite race riding in Melbourne and Sydney.
''This colt will go straight to Sydney after the Blue Diamond for the Golden Slipper and I think it's vitally important to have the right rider for both places and Blake fits the bill perfectly,'' McEvoy said yesterday. ''Blake's an outstanding jockey, as we all know, he seems very focused at the moment as he's making his way back from his [gambling] troubles. You need a jockey with these young horses that can anticipate and predict what is happening around them and look, he's just riding in such hot form that he nearly picks himself.''
Shinn has only been back riding for a month after a 15-month ban for betting offences, but has already had a string of winners recently in Sydney.
Does Southern Speed pose 'genuine' challenge to Black Caviar?
Friday, January 27, 2012
Posted @ 7:21 amA GENUINE challenger for super mare Black Caviar may have emerged when the Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed made a triumphant return to the track in the John Dillon Stakes at Caulfield yesterday, reports The Age.
It says: Southern Speed races next in the Orr Stakes at Caulfield in 15 days where Black Caviar will have her first try at 1400 metres. But while Southern Speed trainer Leon Macdonald said his mare may have improved further from the spring where she famously beat a record number of international horses in the Caulfield Cup, he was reluctant to label her as Black Caviar's major hurdle this autumn.
''I doubt it,'' he said when asked if Southern Speed could deliver Black Caviar's first defeat. ''I'll be happy to run a nice second, but look, that was a great effort today. She had 60 kilograms over a short trip [1400m], but he [jockey Craig Williams] sat up on her at the end. It was a really good win.''
Southern Speed is on track for a tilt at the Australian Cup in March and then BMW in Sydney in April. (www.theage.com.au)
She's Sweet for the Preview but Matt's feet stay on the ground
Thursday, January 26, 2012
Posted @ 6:43 amSWEET Little Lies is a filly that may start at odds of just $2 in today's Blue Diamond Stakes Preview at Caulfield, but despite the positive reviews she has received since her debut win earlier this month, the feet of her trainer Mat Ellerton remain firmly on the ground, reports The Age.
It adds: ''She hasn't missed a beat and has been ticking over really well, but she's still got to go out and do it,'' the Flemington trainer said. ''We couldn't be happier with her, but this race is a different ball game altogether.''
Despite not being entered for the $1 milllion Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield next month, Sweet Little Lies was touted as the horse to beat in the race following her 4¾-length debut win, as her connections are still able to pay a sizeable late-entry fee to include her. But Ellerton is mindful the Elusive Quality filly could be a Thousand Guineas horse as a three-year-old and is wary of pushing her too far.
''It's nearly three weeks since she ran and she's just ticked over well and she's ready to race,'' he said. ''She's got good speed but so have a few of the other fillies, such as Freedy's [Sabie, trained by Anthony Freedman] and Robert Smerdon's [Members Joy], so it'll be interesting to see how she goes.''
Black Caviar surprise entry for Newmarket at Flemington
Tuesday, January 24, 2012
Posted @ 7:18 pmSuperstar mare Black Caviar is a surprise nomination for the $1 million Group 1 Lexus Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on 10 March.
Nominations for Australia's premier sprint closed today and the defending champion was one of 72 horses entered for the Super Saturday feature.
Peter Moody's glamour girl became the shortest priced and fastest winner of the Newmarket Handicap when she carried 58kg to victory in last year's 137th edition.
It was a performance that earned her the title of the world's champion sprinter and took her unbeaten streak to a perfect 10.
After a stellar 2011 that streak now stands at 16 with the five-year-old a hot favourite to stretch it to 17 when she resumes over 1200 metres at Moonee Valley on Friday night.
With plans set in concrete to tackle 1400-metre Group 1 features at Caulfield on 11 and 25 February, a final decision on whether she contests the Newmarket may be some time off.
Aside from her progression over the next month, the biggest determining factor may be the weight allocated the champion mare when they're released on 28 February.
Pendant, the 1906 winner, is the only mare to have carried more weight to victory in the Newmarket than Black Caviar. She was victorious with 60.5kg.
Moody has entered a total of 11 horses in his pursuit of back-to-back Newmarkets including Emirates Stakes runner-up King's Rose who is being primed for a first-up assault on the sprint.
Black Caviar's arch rival Hay List, who has been sidelined through injury and illness since last May, headlines an impressive list of interstate entries which includes Ilovethiscity, Secret Admirer, Beaded, Ortensia, Grand Nirvana and the untapped Rain Affair.
Other notable entries are Emirates Stakes winner Albert The Fat, the emerging Bel Sprinter, weight-for-age performer Rekindled Interest and three-year-olds Foxwedge and African Pulse.
First acceptances for the Lexus Newmarket Handicap will be taken on Tuesday, 21 February.
Hay List returns as Black Caviar prepares for win #17
Monday, January 23, 2012
Posted @ 6:30 amTHE two best thoroughbred sprinters in Australia will be in action in rather different circumstances on Friday, reports The Age.
It says: There will be an official cheer squad and millions of eyes on Black Caviar as she tries to take her unbeaten streak to 17 in the Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley.
And in Sydney the only horse to have stretched the unbeaten star, Hay List, will make a low-key return from a life-threatening injury at the barrier trials. The hulking sprinter's trainer, John McNair, said yesterday he would decide later in the week whether Hay List would travel to Randwick or Wyong for his first trial since a leg infection saw him scratched from the Doomben 10,000 in the winter and threatened to end his career and his life.
''We need to trial him on Friday if we are going to have him ready to run in the Lightning Stakes [at Flemington on February 18], which our preferred option,'' McNair said. ''I have spoken to Glyn [Schofield] and he is going to find out how Randwick is because I want the track to have a bit of give in it. Wyong trials are on Friday as well and we could quite easily go there.''
Given that Black Caviar steps up to 1400 metres after her first-up run, she may not meet her rival on Australian soil again this season. However, the pair may yet reacquaint themselves at Royal Ascot in England in June. (www.theage.com.au)
War Charm set for more racing after Rosehill success
Sunday, January 22, 2012
Posted @ 9:35 amThe Benchmark 73 event for three year-olds at Rosehill on Saturday looked a strong contest on paper with victory going to progressive General Nediym gelding War Charm, whose yearling half-brother will be offered by leading South Australian nursery Mill Park at the 2012 Magic Millions Yearling Sale in Adelaide, reports www.breednet.com.au.
It says: The Danny Williams trained War Charm settled off the pace and charged home to win the 1350 metre event for Peter Robl, taking his overall record to four wins and two placings from 10 starts with prizemoney in excess of $121,000.
"He just keeps improving and improving," said Danny Williams. "He keeps taking the next step and has a great constitution, so for the time being we'll keep him going."
A $280,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Mill Park draft in 2010, War Charm is the third winner from four foals to race from the smart metropolitan winning Unbridled's Song (USA) mare Southern Rose. The current yearling from Southern Rose, a grey colt from the first crop of English Derby winner New Approach (IRE) will be offered as Lot 66 at the Adelaide Magic Millions in March. War Charm has won four times since the catalogue went to print and in his current form will be winning again.
Sth Aussie Dragon ready to roar at Flemington?
Thursday, January 19, 2012
Posted @ 6:33 amDAVID Balfour is a seasoned trainer and knows that to tackle the major autumn sprint races in Victoria it takes a very special horse, reports The Age.
It says: That's why the South Australian will take particular notice of how his mare Obsidian Dragon copes with the $125,00 Kensington Stakes (1000 metres) at Flemington on Saturday. Much will hinge on the performance of Obsidian Dragon, who has won her last three starts, including an authoritative victory at Moonee Valley, but Saturday's race looms as far more of a challenge for the speedster.
''I think if we are to look at races like the Oakleigh Plate and the like, she's going to have to come through with a good result on Saturday,'' Balfour said yesterday. ''Sure, last time was against mares, and this time we are pitted against all comers. But we have to get a gauge on how she is going and where she is going this autumn. If Saturday shows she is out of her depth then we will come home and look at the carnival over here [South Australia].''
In her three wins this preparation, Obsidian Dragon has managed to shrug off any thought that she is merely a limited speedster. ''That she is not,'' Balfour said ''She gives everything, and a bit more. She gives plenty of fight and will not sit down on you. She toughs it out all the way.'' (www.theage.com.au)
Aussie influence grows on Dubai's World Cup meeting
Tuesday, January 17, 2012
Posted @ 6:31 amTHE Australian influence on this year's World Cup meeting in Dubai could be the most pronounced in years following the news that dual Cox Plate winner So You Think will be entered for the Group 1 event, reports The Age.
It says: Connections yesterday confirmed that an entry would be made for So You Think to tackle one of the world's most important races.
Local sprinters Sepoy and Helmet are also set to fly into Dubai. But in making the entry, trainer Aidan O'Brien's wife, Anne-Marie, stressed that So You Think was not a certain starter in the World Cup (2000 metres) at Meydan on March 31. So You Think won three Group I races for the O'Brien stable, but has not raced since missing a place on dirt in the Breeders' Cup Classic (2012 metres) at Churchill Downs in November.
''He will be entered for the race but obviously no decision will be made until nearer the time,'' Mrs O'Brien announced via Twitter.
Gai may be charged following Magic Millions protest probe
Monday, January 16, 2012
Posted @ 7:14 amLEADING Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse could face charges from stewards over her involvement in Saturday's controversial protest in the $2 million Magic Millions Classic on the Gold Coast, reports The Age.
It says: Queensland chairman of stewards Wade Birch has requested the Sky Channel footage of Waterhouse's discussions with stable jockeys Nash Rawiller and Tommy Berry outside the stewards room before the protest was lodged.
Berry eventually protested successfully on behalf of Driefontein against stablemate No Looking Back but it is the nature of discussions between Waterhouse and her jockeys after they had viewed the video of the incident in the straight of the Magic Millions that stewards believe could need investigating.
''We are going to obtain all the relevant footage, I think we are duty bound to do that,'' Birch said.
There are two sections of Australian Rule of Racing 165 that cover the lodging of protests that Waterhouse, Berry or Rawiller could face charges under should stewards choose to go that way.
Section four of the rule reads: ''no person shall improperly deter or attempt to improperly deter a person qualified to object from making an objection''. Section five states: ''No person shall improperly encourage or improperly attempt to encourage a person qualified to object to make an objection''.
Waterhouse would not comment on the protest yesterday, which has caused as much debate for the way it was lodged as for the result, with the race taken off No Looking Back because of interference caused to Driefontein in the final 100 metres. It was a bizarre situation that built the drama even before the protest was lodged.
Nash cops plenty after rocky day at the Magic Millions
Sunday, January 15, 2012
Posted @ 6:12 amSYDNEY'S premier jockey Nash Rawiller was a regular visitor to the stewards room at the Gold Coast yesterday. It ended up costing him $57,000 and a 12-meeting suspension, reports the Sunday Age.
It says: If losing the $2 million feature on protest wasn't bad enough, Rawiller's winning ride on Kontiki Park in the Magic Millions Stayers Cup landed him in further hot water. He pleaded guilty to careless riding and stewards added a $2000 fine to his suspension.
That came on top of losing $55,000 as a result of the Magic Millions Classic protest being upheld. Rawiller will ride Atomic Force in next week's Telegraph Handicap in New Zealand. After that, his suspension will take effect until February 8.
He will be able ride boom juvenile Raceway in the Blue Diamond Prelude at Caulfield on February 11. Yesterday was Rawiller's first day back after being suspended when he won the Grp 1 Railway Stakes on Atomic Force in New Zealand on New Year's Day.
Waller names rival Amarino as hard to beat in 2YO MM
Thursday, January 12, 2012
Posted @ 11:25 amFUNDIDO'S trainer Chris Waller has bucked the market in naming Amorino as the one to beat in the Magic Millions Classic, reports Bart Sinclair in the Courier-Mail.
His article adds: Before his last-start flop at Rosehill on Boxing Day, Fundido was prominent in MM Classic betting but now is a $17 chance for Saturday's race at the Gold Coast and Waller concedes he has a tough task to turn it around from gate 16. He has a strong leaning to Amorino as the one to beat ahead of the two market darlings, Driefontein and Sizzler, who ran one-two in the B.J. McLachlan Stakes at Doomben 12 days ago.
"Amorino has been very impressive in his two wins in Sydney and I rate the form there the strongest two-year-old form in the country," Waller said. "A few years ago I made a conscious decision to ramp up my presence in the two-year-old races but it just hasn't happened despite our best efforts. I'm sure it is because of the strong Sydney juvenile form. It's just so hard to win the races in Sydney. The Sydney trainers have more access to the best breeding area in Australia with so many top studs based in the Hunter.
"Good two-year-olds can come along from the other states but as a group Sydney is usually the benchmark and that seems to be the case this year."

Pied A Terre set for class rise in Chester Manifold
Tuesday, January 10, 2012
Posted @ 6:11 amHE MIGHT not yet have the aura of celebrated stablemates, but unbeaten Darley three-year-old Pied A Terre is likely to take another step up in class when he takes on the older horses in the Chester Manifold Stakes at Flemington on Saturday, reports The Age.
It says: Pied A Terre is also entered against his own age in the Elms Handicap over the same distance where he is topweight with 60 kilograms. But trainer Peter Snowden's son and Melbourne foreman, Paul, said that taking on the older horses was the likely option.
''If he hadn't won first-up, we would have kept him to his own age. But once he won it was always likely that we would step him up again,'' Snowden said. ''We'll have a good look at the fields and the weights, but I'd say, at this stage he's 70 per cent sure to run in the Manifold.''
Heading the weights of the 15 nominations for the Manifold is the Robbie Griffiths-trained Danzylum (60 kilograms), who is aiming for an unprecedented third straight win in the race but will contend with a 5 kilogram weight rise from last year.

Straight Albert shoots for third Cup win at Gosford
Monday, January 9, 2012
Posted @ 6:33 amEMERGING stayer Straight Albert will look to win his third cup in four starts as he faces his biggest challenge in the Gosford Cup on Thursday, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.
It says: Trainer Guy Walter has been pleased with the way the four-year-old has come through his Tattersalls Club Cup win on January 2 and expects him to continue his rise on the Central Coast.
''It is not going to easy but he has been able to handle every step up [in grade] so far,'' Walter said. ''He has a good preparation; he won the Goulburn Cup at a mile and then had a win with big weight at Warwick Farm before showing how strong he is the Tatts Cup. He is getting up in weights now but I have been very happy with what he has done since the Tatts Cup. I think he is probably more of stayer than a miler and it will be interesting to see how far he can go.''
Straight Albert will again have the services of Kathy O'Hara, who rode him to his Goulburn and Tatts Club Cup successes. ''Kathy has been riding in very good form and she rides him particular well,'' Walter said. (www.smh.com.au)
Hawkes produces smart Zabeel gelding at Seymour
Saturday, January 7, 2012
Posted @ 12:35 pmJohn Hawkes knows how to get the best out of a Zabeel and from what we saw at Seymour on Friday he has another promising candidate to work with, reports www.breednet.com.au.
It says: Three year-old gelding Blue Lion made his debut in the 1200 metre maiden and went to the line held together with ears pricked some four and a half lengths in advance of his nearest pursuer in a performance that will have caught the eye of many.
A $250,000 purchase for Hawkes Racing from the Cambridge Stud draft at the 2010 NZB Premier Yearling Sale, Blue Lion runs for Greg Ingham's GPI Racing.
Closely related to multiple Group I winner Vengeance of Rain and Group I AJC Australian Oaks winner Dizelle, Blue Lion is the second winner for Danelish, a half-sister to Group II winner Palatious, the dam of Group I MRC Blue Diamond winner Danelagh, who is the dam of both Vengeance of Rain and Dizelle.
Colic strikes but Jolly says it may have been a blessing
Thursday, January 5, 2012
Posted @ 6:30 amA VERY mild attack of colic that thwarted South Australian sprinter Stirling Grove from competing in Monday's Standish Handicap at Flemington could have been a blessing, according to trainer Richard Jolly, reports The Age.
It says: Stirling Grove was brought to Melbourne on Saturday morning from Adelaide for the Standish and supervising trainer Russell Cameron noticed the horse becoming upset and restless late on Sunday morning. By early afternoon Cameron was concerned enough to have him treated, which ruled the horse out of a start the next day at Flemington.
However, Jolly now maintains that Stirling Grove's passing illness could have worked to the horse's advantage considering the effortless fashion in which eventual winner Catapulted overcame his rivals in the Standish.
''I spoke to Russell on Sunday and he said it was only a very minor problem and the horse was as good as new the next morning,'' Jolly said. ''At the time it meant a reshuffle of our plans as I wanted to use the Standish as a direct lead-up to [the] Chester Manifold Stakes in a few weeks. But I sat at home and watched Catapulted fly down the straight, running under [one minute, eight seconds] for the 1200 metres and thought, well, I don't think we could have done that. But as luck has it a good race at Caulfield was just six days away and probably not as tough as Flemington so everything wasn't lost.''

Craig gets job to turn the Rip around
Wednesday, January 4, 2012
Posted @ 7:54 amCRAIG Williams is the latest jockey to be given the task of turning around the fortunes of Ready To Rip, reports the Brisbane Courier-Mail.
It says: Williams has been engaged for Ready To Rip in the $400,000 Magic Millions Cup over 1400m at the Gold Coast on Saturday week. In his past seven starts, Ready To Rip has had six riders: Scott Galloway, Jim Byrne (2), Ryan Wiggins, Damian Browne, Steven Arnold and Shane Scriven.
Ready To Rip was most unlucky for Galloway when he charged late to go under by a neck to My Destiny in the Lough Neagh Stakes (1350m) at Doomben nine days ago.
Spirit of Boom's golden win keeps the 'knife' away
Tuesday, January 3, 2012
Posted @ 6:23 amSPIRIT Of Boom showcased his vast talent at the Gold Coast but he needs to maintain the form to be retained as a stallion, reports Bart Sinclair in the Courier-Mail in Brisbane.
His report adds: For the moment Spirit Of Boom is saved from the gelding knife. The four-year-old's devastating finish to win the $100,000 Goldmarket Handicap in race record time for the 1300m sprint showed he is capable of winning in Group class.
Spirit Of Boom ($7) belied his lacklustre last start ninth in the Lough Neagh Stakes when he peeled to the outside early in the straight and in a few giant bounds swept past the leaders.
''He's been a terribly frustrating horse. I've been saying for a long time he is a top-class sprinter but his form didn't show that,'' Toowoomba trainer Tony Gollan declared. ''I just knew he had a lend of us last time. I just wanted a good track, a fast pace up front and see him get to the outside. He got that today and he blew them away. He's saved from the gelding operation. For the moment, anyway.''
Rider Ric McMahon agreed with Gollan that Spirit Of Boom resented being cooped up between horses in the Lough Neagh and didn't produce his best. McMahon cleverly positioned Spirit Of Boom in ample room, settling seventh with no horse to his outside and then out and in clear running early in the straight.
Short term Spirit Of Boom is now headed to the Magic Mllions Cup (1400m) at the Coast on Saturday week.
'Only 3 real hopes for MM Classic' says Gai
Monday, January 2, 2012
Posted @ 6:27 amGAI WATERHOUSE says there are only three real hopes in the Magic Millions Classic later this month after the impressive wins by her filly Driefontein and rival Amorino on Saturday, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.
It says: Driefontein put a gap in the McLachlan Stakes field when Sizzling was the only challenger to make ground on the dominant winner at Doomben.
However, the Queensland colt was back in to favourite at $3.40 yesterday for the $2 million feature at the Gold Coast on January 14, just in front of Driefontein at $3.80, while Gerald Ryan's smart winner from Rosehill on Saturday, Amorino, is on the third line of betting at $5.
''How could she have done any more?'' Waterhouse asked after Driefontein ran a race record. ''She was only 95 per cent fit and will only get better. The second horse ran a good race as well but nothing behind them could win the Magic Millions. Did you see how far they beat the rest by? Gerald Ryan's colt [Amorino] was extremely impressive, and you have to put him in there with a chance, but I think Saturday's racing will be the best guide to the Magic Millions.''
Waterhouse will have two runners in the Magic Millions. Her debut Warwick Farm winner No Looking Back will to go into the Gold Coast race first-up after winning a barrier trial on Friday. No Looking Back is on the fourth line of betting at $11, alongside John O'Shea's Wyong Magic Millions winner Hoss Amor and Alezan Thunder from the Mark Kavanagh yard, which won at Sandown on Christmas Eve. Determined Robl makes the most of his return to riding
Friday, December 30, 2011
Posted @ 6:26 amPETER ROBL is a month into his second coming as a Sydney jockey and little has changed for him in terms of winners, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.
It says: ''I have had 12 winners since I have been back and four of those were in town,'' Robl said. ''That is pretty similar to where I was before I got time. It has been a pretty good way to start and now I just have to keep it going.''
He spent a year on the sidelines for his involvement in a betting scandal with friend Blake Shinn. A big part of Robl's penalty was for giving misleading evidence to stewards, rather than betting. He was also found guilty of betting but has moved on. ''I was guilty,'' Robl said. ''I stood up for a friend and I would do it again because that is the way I was brought up. I had a bet, there is no hiding from what I did.''
Robl was equally as forthright in the inquiry where he was given the disqualification ''put bluntly, it is stupidity'' he told stewards. The 40-year-old said he never considered retirement during his ban but whether he would return to Sydney was his biggest dilemma.
Robl forged his career around the border region of NSW and Victoria until 2007 when he was lured to Sydney, and the simpler life in the country would have been an easier option. ''I never contemplated giving it up,'' Robl said. ''The main decision was whether I would stay at home in Wangaratta or come back here. I always liked riding at home and I wasn't sure what the reaction to me would be to me.
''The support has been great. Racing is a very forgiving industry and there were trainers who were offering me rides straight away.''
