'Whistleblower' Mark Hunter will not be charged by Racing Victoria's Investigative Committee for his role in the Damien Oliver betting affair. Hunter placed a bet on Miss Octopussy on Oliver's behalf on October 1, 2010 while the jockey rode Europa Point in the now infamous race. Oliver admitted the offence to the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board, which subsequently suspended him for 10 months for his $10,000 bet. The committee investigated Hunter, trainer Robert Smerdon and former Queensland bookmaker Laurie Bricknell to determine their part in the affair. The committee has announced it will not charge Hunter "as a result of assistance and information provided by Hunter regarding Oliver's betting activity during the investigative phase" while it deemed Bricknell had no case to answer. Smerdon still faces action.
