NSW on-course bookmakers are set to fight back against their corporate cousins

NSW on-course bookmakers are set to fight back against their corporate cousins after finally being able to offer tote odds as part of their service this month, says The Age/SMH. The State Government has changed the law to allow NSW bookmakers to give punters the choice of fixed odds and the best of three TAB dividends from around Australia. ''We haven't been able to compete because we have been selling bread and the corporates have been selling bread and milk,'' rails bookmaker Shane Filipek said. ''We are selling bread and milk now, and we can give the punter what they get everywhere else.'' The State Government was hoping to attract more bookmakers to NSW as they prepare to negotiate the exclusivity agreement with Tabcorp. The initial changes mean bookmakers off-course and with an on-course office will be able to give punters the choice of odds, but it is hoped that will extend to all bookmakers by year's end.
