A belated 'Happy Birthday' to all our equine friends out there for yesterday... I hope many a carrot cake was enjoyed, and the 2011/12 season is a safe and rewarding one for you all (and also for those that ride, prepare and of course, put their hard-earned on you)! Particularly deserving of a birthday treat is none other than Hawks Bay, who absolutely demolished them in the Darwin Cup yesterday under 62kg, and at his third attempt. Fittingly ridden by former Territorian Steven Arnold - who could only be described as 'swinging' on the Neil Dyer galloper as the field approached the bend - Hawks Bay made a mockery of his weight to effortlessly cruise to an insurmountable lead when slipped some rein by the gun hoop, jogging to the line to defeat game stable-mate and fellow carnival regular Palmyra Boy by four lengths.

And speaking of Cups, tomorrow I'll be putting together a preview of this year's Caulfield Cup - as well as the Cox Plate - having first cast my eye over this afternoon's highly anticipated nominations. This is a most exciting time of year for racing enthusiasts, and I can't wait to see the better horses step out again on some drier tracks, and make this punting caper just a little more predictable!
