Tasmania's best weight-for-age galloper delighted the big crowd at Hobart when he held on to win the Thomas Lyons Stakes by a nose, giving trainer Charlie Goggin his fourth win in the Listed race.

Conquering has been dominating the weight-for-age events in Tasmania and on Monday made it four straight when he held out the Peter Moody-trained Scenic Silver in a desperate finish.

Goggin said the six-year-old would try to make it five straight in the $100,000 George Adams Plate (1600m) at Launceston on Sunday week.

After that Conquering will head to Melbourne for the $300,000 Group Two Blamey Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on March 14.

Last spring the Dangerous gelding won over 1519m at Moonee Valley and also claimed the Listed D'Urban Quality (1700m) when he defeated Zagreb at Caulfield.

He was later runner-up to Sea Battle in the Group Two Crystal Mile (1600m) at the Valley and finished seventh to All Silent in the Group One Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.

Conquering was bred by Runnymede Racing and Breeding Pty Ltd, managed by Goggin's wife Lindy and they were clearly delighted with the win, gelding's 18th from 52 starts.

"We bred, reared him, my daughter (Luella) broke him in," Goggin said.

Ridden by Stephen Maskiell, Conquering found plenty under pressure when tackled by Scenic Silver while Captain Kaos was a length away third.

"It's really hard to win from a wide barrier at the 1400 metre start as you have to really have to work hard to get across and he had to niggle at him all the way after that," Goggin said.

"He really wants a mile or further to show his best but he's winning and that's the main thing.

"He's a great trier this horse."

Goggin's other Thomas Lyons Stakes winners were Cafeteria, Golden Serpent and Poacher Star and he now shares the record of four wins in the race with George Blacker, the late Keith Evans and Gary White.
