Darley's juvenile juggernaut rolled on at Rosehill on Saturday but trainer Peter Snowden slammed the door shut on a Blue Diamond start for Helmet.

The Exceed And Excel colt became Snowden's ninth individual two-year-old winner this season when he dictated terms in front to post a two-length winning margin in the Grand Pavilion Handicap (1200m).

Helmet is one of three Snowden-trained youngsters still in the $1 million Group One Blue Diamond (1200m) at Caulfield on February 26 but the trainer indicated he would not be headed that way.

"He's not that sort of horse, I don't feel he's precocious enough for that sort of race," he said.

The stable already has Blue Diamond favourite Sepoy and highly-rated filly Glissade on the Blue Diamond path with the pair to run in their respective Blue Diamond Preludes next Saturday.

While Snowden has doubts about the two-year-old sprints, he had no doubt about Helmet's ability once he gets over longer journeys this autumn.

"You can see by his action he's going to want a lot further, he's not really a whippet," Snowden said.

"He's more of a seven furlong (1400m) to a miler (1600m) at least."

Helmet finished third to Karuta Queen at his only previous start in October and was sent out $1.50 favourite for his return to racing.

He railed up in the early stages from his inside gate to assume the lead and Kerrin McEvoy was able to control the speed.

With 300m to run Helmet looked to be challenged but he kept working through his gears and was strong to the line as he defeated California Poppy ($26) with debutante Abound ($4.20) another half-neck away third.

Abound was backed from $71 to $51 for the Golden Slipper when TAB Sportsbet put up its first market on Friday.

The filly settled in behind the slow speed and didn't have the clearest passage in the straight.

"It wasn't my money on this horse in the Slipper," trainer Mark De Montfort said.

"I would love to see her in a fastrace where she can get back and we can see her running home. But she went OK today."
