A week of starvation brought its just rewards for jockey Shayne Cahill when local stayer Rialya fought back to deny Drunken Sailor victory in Monday's Group Two Adelaide Cup at Morphettville.

If 37-year-old Cahill was feeling any ill effects from his diet, it didn't show as he lifted Rialya ($12) for another challenge after the four-year-old was headed by Drunken Sailor ($5 eq fav) towards the end of the gruelling 3200 metres.

The Lloyd Kennewell-trained Rialya responded to beat Drunken Sailor by a head with Mornington Cup winner Norsqui ($6.50) another two lengths third.

Damien Oliver did a superb job to get the Mike Moroney-trained Drunken Sailor to one-off the fence after jumping from barrier 20 and the Mike Moroney-trained import looked to have the momentum when he ranged up in the straight.

But the fighting qualities of Rialya came to the fore and Drunken Sailor's 59.5kg topweight told in the final 50 metres.

Cahill usually walks around at about 56kg but wasted hard to get to his lightest weight for some years when Kennewell asked him if he could ride Rialya at 54kg.

The Peter Moody-trained Hanks, the other euqal favourite in the Cup, finished fifth while the high ranked Saddler's Story ($9) from the Robert Smerdon stable was 14th.

Less than an hour after he won the Cup, Cahill was back for another Group Two win in the Centrebet Classic (1200m) aboard the Mark Minervini-trained Go The Knuckle who beat Sydney filly Satin Shoes.
