Toowoomba trainer Ron Maund's bid to win the Sydney Cup with Ice Chariot has been overshadowed by a positive swab hearing before Queensland Racing Limited (QRL) stewards.

Stewards took evidence from Maund at an inquiry on Tuesday into a positive swab returned by Pelltro after the gelding finished third to Braebrook in a 1000-metre Open Handicap at Caloundra on March 1.

An analyst's report revealed the sample showed traces of hydrocortisone, a therapeutic substance which affects the central nervous system in horses and a stimulant which can be used to overcome joint problems.

The drug can be produced naturally but also can be administered by injection or be found in creams.

QRL stewards have not laid any charges against Maund and have adjourned the inquiry to a date to be fixed.

"Obviously being a substance that can occur naturally, we've decided to adjourn the inquiry in the interests of racing to allow further tests to be carried out on the sample," acting chief steward Wade Birch said.

Ice Chariot has been campaigning in Sydney during the autumn and was only beaten a half-head when second to Divine Rebel in last Saturday's Group Two Chairman's Handicap (2600m) at Randwick.

The six-year-old, who won the Group One Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm in 2006, is entered for Listed Japan Racing Association Plate (2000m) at Randwick on Saturday.

The Group One Sydney Cup (3200m) will be run at Randwick on Saturday week.

Meanwhile, trainer Barry Baldwin will take promising youngster Racing Pegasus to the beach to work after the filly developed another foot problem which forced her withdrawal from last Saturday's Eagle Farm meeting.

Racing Pegasus hasn't raced since she carried a foot injury into the Magic Millions Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast in January when unplaced to subsequent Golden Slipper winner Phelan Ready.

She went into the Magic Millions unbeaten from her only two previous starts at Doomben.

"We had the foot X-rayed today and the preliminary report was good," Baldwin said.

"There doesn't seem to be much wrong with her and hopefully she can resume in two weeks time over 1000 metres.

"As a precaution I won't risk her on the track and she'll be doing a lot of beach work."

Baldwin is hoping Racing Pegasus can win black type in the Listed Ken Russell Memorial Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast on May 2 or in the Listed Golden Stakes (1200m) at Doomben a week later before raising the bar with her during the winter carnival.
