Jockey Danny Nikolic has been charged by Racing Victoria stewards for his behaviour during a stewards inquiry at Flemington on Oaks Day.

Nikolic has been charged with conduct prejudicial to the image or interests of racing in that he conducted himself in a manner which was insulting and disrespectful towards members of the stewards panel and in doing so used offensive and disrespectful language.

Nikolic's angry outburst at the Oaks Day inquiry was directed at chief steward Terry Bailey over an alleged modified jockeys' vest found in his possession at Flemington over which he was charged and fined $1000.

The jockey snatched the vest from the stewards' table after they ordered its confiscation in an inquiry after the last race.

Nikolic also threw a mobile phone on the stewards table.

At the inquiry Nikolic took exception when Bailey told him stewards would be making a report to the racing integrity sub-committee with regard to his overall conduct.

"You are doing an absolutely disgraceful job," Nikolic told Bailey.

As he exited the stewards room Nikolic said to Bailey: "You have a problem with me, you take it away from the racecourse."

Nikolic and Bailey have a had a number of heated exchanges in the past 12 months.

Earlier this year stewards investigated a number of his rides dating back to October 2009 and looked into the betting activities of some of his associates but the jockey was cleared of four serious charges by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary (RAD) board on June 29.

In February he was fined $2000 for using abusive and insulting language towards Bailey during a confrontation in the stewards room at Moonee Valley relating to the inquiry.

Nikolic was fined $200 for taking a mouthful of beer behind the barrier at Ballarat on September 29 which he spat out.

The charge will be heard by the RAD board on a date to be fixed.
