Rubiscent will make history should he win Saturday's Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes over 1400 metres on the anniversary of his only Group One and weight-for-age victory in last year's 1800m Underwood Stakes.

The six-year-old son of Rubiton would be the first to win both feature events traditionally run on the same day each year.

Trainer Mick Price expects Rubiscent will be better suited under handicap conditions in the Rupert Clarke rather than the Underwood Stakes which he believes he won last year against the odds in one of the upsets of the spring.

Rubiscent was an outsider at $41 and stunned punters when he beat the raging favourite Miss Finland by 1-1/4 lengths.

"I reckon the Underwood was a bit of an anomaly," Price said. "It was not his true form and I think we caught Miss Finland on an off day."

"It was one of those right time, right place occasions."

"He (Rubiscent) is definitely not a genuine weight-for-age horse and we spent all last preparation finding that out."

After finishing fifth at weight-for-age in the Caulfield Stakes, Rubiscent was on the losing end of a three-way photo finish first-up in the autumn in the C F Orr Stakes (1400m) before finishing with the tailenders in the St George Stakes and Australian Cup.

"The Underwood win threw me the wrong way with him but we will now aim at the handicaps in the spring," Price said

He said the Toorak Hcp (1600m) at Caulfield, the Jayco Crystal Mile (1600m) at Moonee Valley and the Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington were all appealing targets after Saturday.

Mannerism and Havelock have come closest landing the Rupert Clarke-Underwood double.

Mannerism won the Rupert Clarke in 1992, a year before she finished second to stablemate Runyon in the Underwood while Havelock won the 1963 Underwood, two years after finishing second to Anonyme in the Rupert Clarke, then known as the Invitation Stakes.

Price has three runners in the Sir Rupert Clarke, but rates Rubiscent as his best chance ahead of the pacy Gotta Have Heart and Dorabella who has drawn the outside of the field.

Price said Rubiscent's first-up ninth to Weekend Hussler in the weight-for-age Memsie Stakes (1400m) had brought him on for the Saturday's mission.

"It is an open race with plenty of chances but he is going super and there will be good pace on which will suit him as he has drawn well (barrier seven) to run in to the race," Price said.

"We would prefer some rain as it looks the track will be a good three but I still expect him to run in the first five."
