Trainer Robert Price will wait until later this week to decide whether Jordan Valley will take his place in the Group Three Summer Cup at Randwick.

The 2400 metre Boxing Day feature was Jordan Valley's original goal but Price said he might instead save the gelding for the Listed Tattersall's Club Cup (2000m) on New Year's Day.

Price is based at Nowra and takes his horses to nearby Seven Mile Beach for much of their training but a lack of springtime swell has meant Jordan Valley is slightly behind schedule.

"We brought him in early with the Summer Cup as his goal but the way things have panned out, he is a little bit behind the eight ball due to the way the beach has been," Price said.

"The swell has been average this spring and when there's no surf it gets a bit soft. We need it nice and firm to get the miles in their legs.

"I haven't ruled the Summer Cup out but it's probably not my preference at the moment.

"A decision will be made later in the week. I'll have a look at the weather and see what the field is like."

Price is renowned for his skill in training horses who have had soundness issues and Jordan Valley has been one such project.

He was sent to Price because he had bad joints and while the lightly-raced five-year-old has just one win from 19 starts, Price said he finally seemed to have outgrown his problems.

"He's only been a frustrating horse in one way and that's because he has average fetlock joints," Price said.

"His post-race recovery has always been the hard part but I think it's been a maturity issue and this preparation he has come through every run spot-on."

Jordan Valley has been placed at his only two starts over the Summer Cup journey and Price believes he is ready to peak after four runs back from a spell.

He caught the eye when he came from last to run third to fellow Summer Cup entrant Rainbow Styling over 2000m at Randwick on Saturday and Price said he had pulled up well from the effort.

Showers have been forecast later this week and any rain would boost Jordan Valley's chances of a Summer Cup start with Jay Ford on standby for the ride.

There were 14 entries on Monday for the feature race including in-form Bart Cummings-trained stayer Zazabeau, Rockwood for Gai Waterhouse, New Zealander Solid Billing and Christmas Cup winner Scouting Wide.

The Tim Martin-trained gelding will be striving to emulate the feat of Ready To Lift who claimed the Cup double for Gerald Ryan last year.

Martin already has one Summer Cup to his credit having claimed the race with This Manshood five years ago.
