New Zealand-based Australian jockey Gavin McKeon is in an induced coma after suffering suspected head injuries in a race fall.

McKeon was riding at Otaki on Thursday when his mount clipped heels and fell.

Heavily concussed, McKeon was taken to Palmerston North Hospital where he remained in intensive care on Friday.

Levin Racing Club stipendiary steward Neil Goodwin said McKeon suffered head injuries.

McKeon, 28, hails from western NSW but he finished his apprenticeship in Brisbane before heading to New Zealand where he soon become one of the country's leading riders.

He formed a potent association with glamour galloper Seachange in New Zealand's major races until the mare's retirement earlier this year.
