A SMALL group of Australian punters who have accounts with the world's largest betting exchange, Betfair, will be the basis of an investigation into jockey Danny Nikolic by Racing Victoria Stewards, which starts today, reports The Age.

It says: The punters' accounts and the betting trends of those accounts over the past few months will be pivotal to the investigation.

The inquiry follows Betfair's investigators, after careful monitoring of accounts, alerting stewards around Australia to a series of abnormal transactions.

It's understood that these isolated betting accounts revealed significant spikes on certain races with ''multiple changes'' in the value of the bets.

Investigations are also probing a relationship between the account holders.

''We are not able to reveal any information on specific accounts. However, if RVL stewards have concerns about those parties we are able to suspend them betting with the company,'' Betfair spokesman Hugh Taggart said last night. Betfair's security process can analyse punters' betting patterns and throw a red flag if a punter starts laying horses for large amounts rather than backing them to win.
