The Group I King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot overnight was billed as a clash between last year's Arc winner Workforce and So You Think's nemesis Rewilding, but at the post neither had won and the latter had met a tragic fate, reports Tara Madgwick at www.breednet.com.au.

Her report says: Victory in the race went to up and coming three year-old Nathaniel, another star performer for red hot sire Galileo.

A runaway winner of the Group II King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot on his previous start, Nathaniel was supplemented for the King George at a cost of ú75,000 and it proved to be money well-spent.

There proved little pace in the mile and a half showpiece and jockey William Buick was forced to take the lead as the runners turned for home, holding on to beat last year's Derby and Arc hero Workforce by two and three-quarter lengths. Having his first start since defeating So You Think in the Group I Princes of Wales Stakes at Royal Ascot, Rewilding snapped a near fore cannon bone with two furlongs to run and had to be put down in front of the grandstand. Frankie Dettori, rider of Rewilding, had to be helped from the track after he was thrown to the ground in the incident and although he was taken back to the weighing room in an ambulance, he escaped relatively unscathed but was stood down for the rest of the day.

"To finish in front of a horse like Workforce is everything. He sets the standard - he is an Arc winner, a Derby winner and a phenomenal horse," said winning trainer John Gosden. "I think Nathaniel will go straight to the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe now and maybe just have a racecourse gallop somewhere in between. With a bit of luck we will meet Workforce again at Longchamp. Unfortunately we have to supplement again because he hadn't even broken his maiden when they shut the Arc. It will be wonderful if we can meet again in Paris in October."
